Amy's story
She learned the system one patient at a time.
Amy came to medicine by way of systems. She studied environmental studies and mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania and environmental health engineering at Johns Hopkins University, then went to medical school and trained in emergency medicine at George Washington University. One question followed her the whole way: how do all the pieces actually fit together, and where do they not?
That question took her beyond the bedside and into the business of medicine, especially the parts of the system that shape care for older adults. When she opened her own house calls practice and learning the billing and coding to run it, she finally saw the full picture: what Medicare pays for and what it doesn't, how doctors get paid, and what older adults and caregivers actually go through. Over tens of thousands of house calls, she saw good people doing their part well, and older adults falling through the gaps between those parts. When she trained her own staff, she found that almost no one had been taught that map. The CareMap is how she teaches it.
